Before You Begin Riding
As a professional rider and trainer, who runs a sizable lesson program (150+ students) here is a list of things I wish people knew before they or their child begins riding.
Horseback riding is one of the most rewarding sports in the world — but it is also one of the most challenging. As a professional rider and trainer who oversees a lesson program with more than 150 students, there are a few things I truly wish every new rider and parent understood before beginning this journey.
Our goal is always to create confident, knowledgeable, and safe riders while helping each student develop a genuine love and respect for horses. The lessons learned here extend far beyond the saddle.
Riding Is a Real Sport
Riding requires dedication, consistency, patience, and practice — just like any other competitive sport. The difference is that your teammate is a living animal with instincts, emotions, and reactions of their own.
Horses are incredibly intuitive. They respond to a rider’s confidence, emotions, energy, and communication every second they are together. Learning to ride well takes time because students are not simply learning a physical skill — they are learning partnership, timing, discipline, and trust.
Progress in riding is earned, not rushed.
Falling Off Is Part of the Sport
If a rider stays in this sport long enough, chances are they will eventually fall off. While we take every possible precaution to prioritize safety, horseback riding does carry inherent risks.
The equestrian world often says, “You’re not a real rider until you’ve fallen off and gotten back on.” While falling can certainly be scary, it is also part of learning resilience, courage, and confidence.
This is exactly why helmets and proper safety equipment are non-negotiable in our program.
Advancement Happens When Riders Are Truly Ready
Every rider progresses at their own pace. Trotting, cantering, jumping, and showing are exciting milestones, but they only happen when an instructor determines a student is physically, mentally, and emotionally prepared.
Our instructors will never rush a rider into the next step before they are ready simply to meet outside expectations. Safety, confidence, and proper fundamentals always come first.
We want every rider to succeed — and strong foundations are what create successful riders in the long run.
Riding Teaches Life Skills Beyond the Saddle
Horseback riding develops far more than riding ability. It teaches responsibility, perseverance, communication, humility, adaptability, and mental strength.
Riders learn:
-
To put their horse’s needs before their own
-
How to work through fear and uncertainty
-
The importance of patience and consistency
-
How to adapt and problem solve
-
That setbacks are opportunities to learn and grow
-
How valuable teamwork, discipline, and resilience truly are
The horse world has a way of building confident, hardworking individuals both inside and outside the arena.
Horses Are Expensive — and Passion Driven
We work hard to make riding as accessible as possible through lesson programs, horsemanship opportunities, working student programs, and flexible options for committed riders and families.
However, horses are expensive animals to care for properly. Lesson fees support far more than time spent in the saddle. They contribute to:
-
Horse care and veterinary expenses
-
Feed and bedding
-
Facility maintenance
-
Arena upkeep
-
Staff and barn help
-
Tack and equipment maintenance
Most trainers are not in this industry for financial gain — they do it because they genuinely love horses and teaching.
Many equestrians began exactly where your rider is now: cleaning stalls, helping around the barn, braiding horses, and working hard to continue pursuing the sport they love. Those experiences often become some of the most valuable lessons of all.
Our Commitment
Our mission is to create a safe, encouraging environment where riders can grow at their own pace, build confidence, and develop lifelong skills both in and out of the saddle.
Whether your rider dreams of showing competitively or simply wants to enjoy time with horses, we are honored to be part of their journey.
